Birds at War - Ton Skinner
Bird Wars #1 - Territorial Battle This photo is one of a series I have taken over a three year period in and around Vernon BC.
This photo was taken at Mud Lake (McKergow Meadows) on Middleton Mountain. Taken in June, this photo typifies the constant battle
between birds for territory. The Great Blue Herons seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that they are in another bird's
territory. In this case, the smaller Redwing Blackbirds become very aggressive and dive bomb
the GBH. What I have noticed is that the RWB will work as a
team and usually drive off the bigger bird. When the GBH decides to "take off” it frequently lands in another area, and the whole scenario is
repeated. The GBH has come to feed, possibly on fish.
The RWB are setting up nests.
